Anxiety disorders are common in both children and adults. In the Philippines, depression and anxiety are correlated. In an article, it’s cited that “A study in the Journal of Adolescent Health examined 264 adolescent regarding their use of social media and negative encounters enrolled under the New England Family Study (NEFS), Magtubo, C. (n.d.)…”

There are several types of anxiety. Below we will detail them further:

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

Generalized Anxiety Disorder or GAD is characterized by persistent anxious feelings and worry. Persons who experience GAD worry about a number of concerns such as:

  • Health
  • Finance
  • General worry about life

What are the symptoms?

There are several symptoms that GAD presents. Here is a short, non-comprehensive list:

  • Restlessness
  • Irritability
  • Muscle tension
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Sleep problems
  • Generally feeling ‘on edge’

Panic Disorder

Panic disorder is marked by recurrent panic attacks that can include many symptoms including those listed below:

  • Sweating
  • Trembling and tremors
  • Shortness of breath (sensation of asphyxiation)
  • Feeling of choking
  • Pounding heart (palpitations)
  • Increased or rapid heart rate
  • Feelings of dread

People who experience panic attacks often become very fearful about when their next episode will occur which restricts their normal activities therefore affecting their daily lives.

Phobias

Phobias are very intense fears about certain objects, for example spiders and snakes. Exposure to these things can cause extreme distress.

Psychologists and Psychiatrists are trained in diagnosing anxiety disorders and teaching patients healthier, more effective ways to cope. A form of psychotherapy known as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (or ‘CBT’) is highly effective in treating anxiety disorders. Through CBT, psychologists help patients learn to identify and manage the factors that contribute to their anxiety.

Psychotherapy for Anxiety Disorders: What to Expect

Psychotherapy is a collaborative process. It involves the psychologist and the patient working together to deeply identify some areas of concerns. The Psychologist and the client create concrete coping skills and techniques. There are circumstances when the client will have to practice what is learned during sessions, this way he or she can begin managing his or her anxiety better in situations that make them uncomfortable.

Anxiety disorders are very treatable. Most patients who suffer from it are able to eliminate or reduce the symptoms after a few months of months. Some patients even report major improvements after just a few session with a psychologist.
